Florida Gulf Coast University was once known as Dunk City. In the third-place game of the 2023 Women's Gulf Coast Showcase, FGCU took UNC to upset city. 

The Eagles beat No. 18 North Carolina 65-64 in the third-place game of the showcase. In what was the best matchup of the 2023 Women's Gulf Coast Showcase so far, FGCU held UNC scoreless in the final 3:45 of the game to win n Nov. 26 in Estero, Florida.

After losing by 38 points to Iowa the night before, Florida Gulf Coast, a short 10 minute drive from Estero, bounced back and never let UNC lead by more than seven points before getting the win. 

Dolly Cairns led the Eagles with 18 points and made four 3-pointers to lead the team. 

For North Carolina, who had hoped for a chance to play No. 5 Iowa in the championship game when they arrived in South Florida, the trip was a disappointment. After nearly losing to Vermont, who didn't win a game at the tournament, North Carolina fell to Kansas State 63-56 in the semifinals. 

Deja Kelly scored 24 and Maria Gakdeng added 22 against Florida Gulf Coast.

Yes. UConn Women's Basketball won the 2015 NCAA Women's Tournament Championship. The Huskies won their second straight championship. But before that UConn won the Gulf Coast Showcase championship, beating College of Charleston, Vanderbilt ad Green Bay.

Selection Sunday for the NCAA Women’s Tournament is March 17, 2024. The First Four will tip off March 20, with the Round of 64 beginning March 22.
