Dec. 11 Women's AP Top 25: UNLV Runs In On An Undefeated Roll
Dec. 11 Women's AP Top 25: UNLV Runs In On An Undefeated Roll
One of eight undefeated teams remaining in college basketball, UNLV, made its way into the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time this season.
On its way to a 9-0 start, UNLV isn't just one of the last eight remaining undefeated teams in college basketball: The Runnin' Rebels have reached that mark winning all nine games by double-digit-point margins.
UNLV extended that dominant start on Dec. 9 with a 92-76 romp at Oklahoma, a fixture in the NCAA Tournament scene. Associated Press Top 25 voters heard the statement the Runnin' Rebels made with that win loud-and-clear, finally adding UNLV to the poll on Dec. 11.
Coach Lindy La Rocque's team continues a three-game road swing after the defeat of Oklahoma, traveling to the East Coast for a pair of games in New Jersey. UNLV opens its Garden State swing on Saturday, taking on Seton Hall in a matchup here on FloHoops.com.
The Runnin' Rebels vs. Pirates is one of two marquee BIG EAST Conference contests with AP Top 25 implications airing on FloHoops this week, as Wednesday features arguably the best contest on the docket.
Marquette, which is with UNLV among the ranks of the remaining undefeated, puts its unblemished record and No. 19 designation on the line against No. 20-ranked Creighton.
The BIG EAST opener for both teams is a top 20 encounter, thanks to Creighton's climb two spots in the Dec. 11. This edition of the Top 25 didn't feature much movement at all, with each of the top 11 teams from the Dec. 4 poll remaining where they were.
That includes Utah, which stayed at No. 11 despite a loss to top-ranked South Carolina. The Utes gave the Gamecocks a challenge thanks to Alissa Pili's 37 points. Utah also forced 23 turnovers, but it wasn't enough to unseat the nation's No. 1 team.
South Carolina endured, 78-69, in one of three Top 25 results last Sunday in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Another saw UConn score a much-needed ranked win with its 76-64 defeat of North Carolina. The Tar Heels fell to the 25th spot in the Dec. 11 poll as a result, while the Huskies held steady at No. 17.
North Carolina is one of three ACC teams occupying spots No. 22 through 25 in the poll, as undefeated Miami makes its first appearance of the campaign at No. 24.
The 8-0 Hurricanes face a huge test on Dec. 16, traveling to Texas to meet fellow undefeated team Baylor. The Bears sit at 7-0 and No. 10.
Sunday's event in Connecticut also featured No. 2-ranked UCLA continuing its best start in program history with a 95-78 romp of Florida State, which dropped the Seminoles to No. 22.
Florida State joins its ACC counterparts Miami and North Carolina in those last few Top 25 spots, but things don't get any easier for a Seminoles bunch that has run an early-season gauntlet.
Florida State has faced a pair of current top 10-ranked opponents in UCLA and Stanford, and have another — No. 3 North Carolina State — looming just after the New Year.
Before seeing the Wolfpack, the Seminoles have to get past Drexel. The Dragons play a methodical style that has produced one of the nation's stingiest defenses at just 49.3 points allowed per game.
