The CAA Men's Basketball Tournament finished the quarterfinals on March 10 and featured upsets to stir up the bracket heading into the semifinals. The semifinals will tipoff with No.1 Charleston vs. No.4 UNCW on March, 11 at 6:pm EST.

In the quarterfinals on March 9, No.1 Charleston defeated No.8 Monmouth 83-59 as the Cougars continue the chase for back-to-back CAA Tournament titles. In an upset win, No.5 Towson defeated No.4 UNCW 66-56 earning the Tigers their third straight trip to the semifinals. 

No.7 Stony Brook upset  No.2 Drexel with a final score of 91-88 in a double overtime game down to the final minutes. This earned the Seawolves their first trip to the CAA Tournament semifinals in school history.

No.3 Hofstra defeated No.6 Delaware 73-58 to return back to the semifinals where the Pride's run as the No.1 seed in 2023 was cut short with a loss to UNCW.

CAA Men's Basketball Bracket Quarterfinals Recap

After the completion and upsets that took place in the CAA Tournament Quarterfinals, here's a look at the major takeaways heading into the Semifinals. 

1. Stony Brook Basketball and Towson Basketball are making history.

The No.7 seed Stony Brook  defeated No.2 Drexel 91-88 in a double overtime game down to the final buzzer. The Seawolves are now 19-14 on the season, a two game improvement upon last season, and their first time reaching the CAA semifinals in school history.

Graduate guards Aaron Clarke and Chris Maidoh led the Seawolves to victory, both scoring their season high in points in no better time than March Madness. Clarke finished with 27 points on 11-20 FG shooting and added 7 rebounds. Maidoh finished with 25 points on 12-17 FG shooting with 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. 

This season marks Stony Brook's third in the CAA and their best record yet. Prior to the CAA, the Seawolves won their last America East Conference title in 2016 

Drexel fought to the final horn despite coming up a basket short in the final minutes concluding their season with a 20-12 record. Tyler Stephenson-Moore led the Dragons and poured in 28 points while shooting 7-11 from 3PT-FG.

No.5 Towson took down No.4 UNCW 66-56 ending the Seahawks streak of two consecutive finals appearances.Towson moves to 20-13 on the season and returns to the CAA Tournament semifinals to play No.1 Charleston. Last year, the Tigers lost to Charleston in the Semifinals 77-72.

In the Tigers' quarterfinals victory, Williamson Dylan led the way with 18 points on 3-9 FG shooting and 11-11 from the FT line. Nendah Tarke contributed 15 points on 4-11 FG shooting and added 5 rebounds. As a team Towson shot 47% from FG and 40% from 3PT-FG.

Towson and Charleston are tied 1-1 in CAA regular season play giving the Tigers the opportunity to upset the No.1 seed in a highly anticipated rematch.

2. Charleston Men's Basketball Has Plenty Of Gas In The Tank

Charleston, who is the No.1 seed and defending CAA Tournament champions, will return to semifinals after a 83 -59 win over No. 8 Monmouth. Charleston improves to 25-7 on the season and adds to their now 10-game winning streak.

The Cougars concluded the 2023-24 CAA regular season on a nine-game winning streak which may pose the question: Did Charleston peak to early?

After a convincing win against Monmouth in the quarterfinals, Charleston appears to still be firing on all cylinders and remains to be CAA basketball's favorite to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the Cougars win, four players reached double-digits in scoring including Bem Burnham,  Ante Brzovic, Frankie Policelli, and Kobe Rodgers. Burnham held the team high with 16 points on 7-11 FG shooting .

Coach Pat Kelsey has been very successful in leading his teams to the postseason with just three seasons at the helm of the program. Last year, the Cougars finished the regular season with a seven game winning streak heading into the CAA Tournament before winning the championship.

Charleston remaining poised and sticking to their plans in recent success will be key as they face Towson in a heated semifinals rematch. 

3. Hofstra Men's Basketball Has A Serious Shot

 The No.3 seed Hofstra defeated No. 6 Delaware 73-58 in the quarterfinals. Hofstra advanced to 20-12 on the season. The Pride were last year's No.1 seed in the 2023 CAA Tournament where they lost to the semifinals 79-73 to No.4 UNCW. 

Hofstra will now face No.7 Stony Brook in the semifinals. The Pride have two wins over Stony Brook this season earlier in CAA  play. 

Tyler Thomas, the CAA Player of the Year, is showing no signs of slowing down as he leads this team through March Madness. Thomas scored 14 points in Hofstra's quarterfinals win on 5-19 FG Shooting. However, it was Darlinstone Dubar who led the way this game with 23 points and also added 10 rebounds. 

In Hofstra's first meeting against Stony Brook, Dubar scored 30 points, while in the second meeting Thomas led with 26 points. Both these players will be key in Hofstra's run this year as they look to reach the Finals for the fist time since 2019.
