UTEP Dominates In 70-44 Victory Against LBSU
For the first ten minutes of this matchup, it looked like LBSU was really controlling the pace of the game. Austin Johnson opened up scoring two and a half minutes into the game. After teams exchanged possessions, LBSU extended their lead to 5 with a three point jumper from Devin Askew. Otis Frazier III cut the lead to 3, with a layup that put UTEP on the board, but Devin Askew drained another that had the Beach lead up to 6. A layup from David Terrell Jr. and a three by Otis Frazier III made it a one point game a little over five minutes into the game. After back to back turnovers and missed shots, LBSU was able to get back on the board with a three pointer by TJ Wainwright. He was fouled on the play and drained all three free throws, as the Beach doubled up on the Miners, leading 14-7.
Corey Camper Jr. was able to cut back into that lead with a pair of free throws and a layup, making it 14-11 nearly halfway through the half. A jumper by Ahmad Bynum made it a one point game before he made a three pointer to give UTEP their first lead of the game. Devin Askew quickly matched him and the teams traed points as it was deadlocked at 19 a piece. From there the Miners found a rhythm, going on a run to make It 34-21 with a little under two minutes to go in the half. Varick Lewis ended the scoring drought for the Beach, but they were unable to do much as they went in the locker room down 37-23.
David Terrell and Derick Hamilton made it a 41-23 lead to start the second half. From there, LBSU was completely out of rhythm. 43-24 because 46-26 and it seemed like every time the Beach were able to get a couple of points on the board, UTEP would come back with twice as many. Four minutes into the half, Corey Camper Jr. had a huge steal and dunk and there was no coming back for that for the Beach as they trailed 48-26. The Miners took a dominating 61-34 lead with a little under 10 minutes to go in the game. They rode that victory out and finished with a 70-44 victory.
UTEP had three players contribute with 10+ points: David Terrell Jr., Corey Camper Jr., and Ahmad Bynum. They got 23 points from their bench and played a very well balanced offensive game. For Long Beach State, the team struggled to score apart from Devin Askew and TJ Wainwright who had 21 and 14 points a piece. Austin Johnson contributed with two points and they received 7 points from players off their bench. UTEP also dominated the defensive game with 16 steals and 2 blocks as they played a balanced game to lead them to a solid victory.
