The No. 13 Duke women's basketball team took on No. 8 Oklahoma at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27. This was Duke's second upset win in a row against undefeated teams ranked in the top 10 and they were crowned the champion of the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic

It was a brutal battle to the end as Oklahoma surged late in the game to close a gap that was in Duke's favor as much as 15 points earlier in the game. A buzzer beater three in the fourth quarter from the triple-double earner Payton Verhulst (29 pts, 10 rebs, 10 assists) gave the Sooners one last life. But, they could not hold on in overtime.

Duke's last battle, on Monday, Nov. 25 against No. 9 Kansas State, resulted in a dominant win for the Blue Devils and earned them their first upset win of the season.

The 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic women's tournament tipped off Monday at Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada with two games.

The Blue Devils began the season No. 11 in the rankings but dropped to No. 14 in the rankings last week. They moved up one spot after a win against Belmont.

Duke lost to Maryland, 85-80, in an early season matchup, but has rebounded nicely with three straight wins.

Oklahoma WBB had a smooth ride so far this season, including an impressive 122-56 win over Western Carolina. Their closest win was on Monday against DePaul, who they still outscored by more than 20 points.

Final Score: Duke 109 - 99 Oklahoma

How lucky are we to get some extra basketball between these two top ranked powerhouses?

Oklahoma took a one point lead for the first time since the first quarter off of a foul to Beers, one for two.

Duke took the lead back thanks to a jumper from Richardson, Mair on the assist.

Verhulst drains yet another three to make her 4-8 on 3FGs.

Somehow, despite all of these fouls both ways, no players have fouled out. Across both teams, ten players have three or more fouls.

A late turnover off of a bad pass credited to Reagan Beers gave Duke the ball back in their own end with a 103-99 lead.

On Oklahoma's next possession, Beers was called for an offensive foul, which gave Duke the ball back with 60 seconds remaining.

Richardson sinks yet another three and extends the lead in Duke's favor to 108-99.

Top Scorers

  • Duke - Reigan Richardson 35 pts, 3 reb, 7 assists
  • Duke - Ashlon Jackson 18 pts, 3 reb, 4 assists
  • Oklahoma - Payton Verhulst 29 pts, 10 reb, 10 assists
  • Oklahoma - Reagan Beers 26 pts, 6 reb, 4 assists

Fourth Quarter Score: Duke 94 - 94 Oklahoma

Time will tell who holds the momentum after a tumultuous third quarter. Upset watch is officially underway for Duke's second game in a row.

Oklahoma is turning the screws tighter, though. Duke is in dangerous foul territory—three players have three fouls: De Jesus, Fournier, and Thomas. Mair has four including a technical.

With five and a half minutes remaining, the gap is just one and Oklahoma's pressure is still growing. Verhulst nails a three tying the game for the first time since the first half at 73. Duke's Reagan Richardson answers back with a three of her own.

On Oklahoma's next possession, a turnover by Beers leads to a quick transition the other way for another three from Jackson—her fourth of the night.

As the final two minutes diminish, both teams' offenses are still working like well-oiled machines. Duke just barely held the edge with two minutes remaining with a four point lead.

Duke called the timeout. Trailing by five with 30 seconds, Oklahoma had a big task ahead of them.

Oklahoma went for a quick play from Verhulst on the pass-in to Beers, who quickly laid it up closing the gap to three.

The other way, Duke's Mair made the layup extending the lead to five again with 24 seconds left.

Oklahoma makes a similar call to their last with the ball on their end, just 22 seconds remain.

Jackson goes to the line to make both free throws for Duke. Going the other way, Keys took the pass from Verhulst for a triple, closing the gap to just two with nine seconds remaining.

Mair for Blue Devils made just one of two free throws, giving Oklahoma one last chance for a three to tie with four seconds remaining.

Verhulst takes the three from Scott with just two seconds left and sinks it to tie the game at the buzzer.

Third Quarter Score: Duke 65 - 58 Oklahoma

Reagan Beers is back on the court at the beginning of the second half.

The first few minutes of the half have been a back-and-forth, stuck with an 11 point gap.

Time has been stopped at 7:28 for a review by the officials. Duke's Richardson went down hard after taking a shoulder to the upper body by Oklahoma's Scott. Richardson walked off holding a towel to her face. After review, the officials determined that there was no intentional foul on the play.

After play resumed, it felt like the Sooners started pulling the momentum back in their direction it but Duke was still able to keep the gap greater than nine points until we fell under the five minute mark.

The momentum continues to sway towards Oklahoma as a technical foul is given to Mair and the gap is cut down three after four free throws (3 for 4).

As the game continues into the final 3 minutes of the quarter, Reagan Beers was fouled deep in the paint, gets the And 1 for the three point play, increasing her total contribution to 12 points.

Fouls have increased significantly in the last few minutes as things slow down in the late third quarter. Duke's lead has dwindled to just two with 90 seconds remaining.

As the time dwindles, Duke's Jackson nailed the half court shot at the buzzer, increasing the gap to seven and a total of 11 points.

Halftime Score: Duke 46 - 35 Oklahoma

Now that the second quarter is underway, Duke is starting to extend their lead. Duke's Jordan Wood starts the quarter with a long three without hesitation, 5-5 FGs.

After Duke makes it a 12-point gap, Oklahoma calls their first timeout of the game just 90 seconds into the second.

Back from the timeout, the ball keeps rolling for the team from Durham, North Carolina.

Verhulst sank a beautiful reverse layup under the basket after receiving the handoff from Beers at the arc. Duke followed it up immediately with another three from Ashlon Jackson.

Verhulst followed up her next possession by going about as far out as she could and buries a three. On the other side of the court, Jordan Wood scores again, making it a perfect 6-6 FGs for 14 points.

With three minutes remaining, Duke's defense has continued their success, suffocating the Oklahoma offense. After 20 minutes of play, they've been able to hold all of the Sooners to less than 10 points. Beers and Verhulst are the closest with nine.

For the Blue Devils at the half, Richardson and Wood have 14 points with Jackson following at 8.

In an odd collision with 90 seconds remaining, Beers goes down in the paint with Fournier. Beers limped off with what appears to be an ankle injury.

After a short break, a flagrant foul was called on Fournier for an intentional foul.

A bit more back and forth without much scoring, and the clock dwindles down.

First Quarter Score: Duke 27 - 20 Oklahoma

Things quickly evened out after the first six minutes of play. Duke has been able to increase the pressure in the paint and force early turnovers that they've turned around into points on the other end.

Ashlon Jackson got going in the latter half of the quarter, making her first three of the night and making two free throws off of a Verhulst personal foul.

Reigan Richardson has contributed 7 points already, going 3-6 on FGs.

For the Sooners, Beers put up 9 points.

First Five Minutes: Duke 11 - 14 Oklahoma

And the 2024 Ball Dawgs Classic championship game is underway between these two nationally ranked top 25 teams.

Beers puts up the first points of the afternoon, giving Oklahoma the 2-point lead. Oklahoma got a first defensive stop with a shot block on the first offensive possession by the Duke Blue Devils.

Jadyn Donovan puts the first points on the board for Duke with a nice pull up shot at the free throw line.

Reagan Beers sinks her third FG, first three-pointer of the game about two minutes in. She made it look easy.

The next few possessions both ways resulted in early personal fouls. Duke pulled out the full court pressure already, just three minutes into the game.

It didn't stop Oklahoma's Verhulst, though, who drove the lane and earned a quick layup. A quick three from Duke and two turnovers into FGs resulted in a seven point swing over just 15 seconds of play towards the Blue Devils. And there's the first TV timeout.
