They opened up their Cancun Challenge slate with a 73-67 gritty win against Wisconsin and plays against Providence at 11:00 a.m. ET on Saturday.. Meanwhile VCU falls to 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Cancun Challenge. They won in a close 57-51 matchup against Providence on Day 1 and face Wisconsin at 1:30 p.m. ET tomorrow for their final game of the weekend.

After VCU led 26-22 at the half, SDSU came out of the half with some fire. They went on a 19-8 run in the third quarter to take a seven point 41-34 lead. For the last ten minutes, they just took care of the ball and maintained their lead, pulling away with a 55-46 victory. Here is a full recap of the game below.

SDSU Outscores VCU 19-8 In The Third Quarter To Pull Away

VCU's Mary Anna Asare was the star for the Rams with 16 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Timaya Lewis-Eutusey also contributed heavily for VCU with 14 points and 4 rebounds. For the Aztecs, Adryana Quezada came off the bench and lit a spark. She finished with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Veronica Sheffey finished the day with 11 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block. Kim Villalobos and Naomi Panganiban both put up 7 points apiece as well.

VCU had a narrow 16-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The first five minutes were very back and forth with both teams trading points. The Aztecs actually took a 12-10 lead with Natalia Martinez nailing a three pointer and the subsequent three free throws. Following the Aztecs extending the lead to 4, Mary Anna Asare and Valentina Ojeda scored two a piece to tie it all up before Ojeda added another two just as time expired. In a low scoring second quarter, the Rams extended their lead to 4 at 26-22. It was a largely uneventful quarter with a good chunk of points coming from free throws and the teams only scoring 8 and 10 points a piece.

It was a new SDSU that started the second half as they came out and outscored the Rams by 11 in the third quarter. It was a very balanced quarter for the Aztecs with Panganiban, Sheffy, Quezada, and Cali Clark all putting points on the board. Nearly the first half of the fourth quarter was scoreless for both teams apart from a free throw for Kim Villalobos. Mary Anna Asare broke the scoring drought with a three point jumper that cut the deficit to 5 at 42-37. From there the teams both scored four points a piece with four straight jumpers. With three minutes to go, VCU tried to cut the deficit one last time as Asare downed a three, but a few turnovers and SDSU free throws widened the gap and San Diego State came away with a 55-46 victory.
