Rice Wraps Up Cancun Challenge Play With A 79-57 Win Against Vermont

Rice and Vermont both go 1-1 on the weekend at the Cancun Challenge as the Owls win 79-57 after trailing early on. Read the full recap of the game below.

The Rice Owls are now 5-3 on the season with their 79-57 victory against Vermont. Both teams finish 1-1 in the Cancun Challenge. Rice fell to BYU 63-51 yesterday but bounced back nicely tonight. Vermont defeated Idaho State 64-44 yesterday before stumbling today. They are now 4-5 on the season. 

Vermont hopped out to an early lead before Rice took over with a dominant performance the rest of the game. 

Rice hit over twice as many threes and came up huge defensively with 10 steals. They propelled themselves to victory with their well rounded game after heir slow start.

After A Slow Start, Rice Pulls Away For A Dominant Victory

Vermont held on to a five point lead at the end of the first quarter. Keira Hanson and Bella Vito had a huge first quarter for Vermont, propelling them to their early lead. Hanson put up 8 points and Vito added 5, together making up 13 of Vermont's 21 points. Hailey Adams put 7 points on the board for Rice alongside Emily Klaczek and and Shelby Hayes who put up 4 a piece. Two minutes into the second quarter, Vermont led 25-18. Trinity Gooden made it a 5 point game for Rice and from there they came alive. The Owls went on a 9-0 run to take a two point run. Vermont evened it up at 27 and from there it was a new game. Rice finished the quarter on a 8-4 run and lead by 6 at the half. 

Anna Olson kicked off things in the third quarter with a jumper and free throw, making it a 3 point game. From there, Rice went on a 16-0 run with points from Emily Klaczek, Sussy Ngulefac, Jazzy Owens-Barrett, Dominique Ennis, and Maya Bokunewicz. They were able to get so many players involved offensively, and it was just an absolute struggle for Vermont to keep up defensively. Rice took a dominating 20 point lead at 63-43 as they cruised into the fourth quarter. The last five minutes of the game were practically scoreless with Rice really slowing down Vermont's game and taking care of business. They controlled the pace of the game and held on to their victory to return home on a positive note.

Rice had 9 different players put up points with 3 putting up over 10. Dominique Ennis, Emily Klaczek, and Victoria Flores put up 14, 17, and 18 points respectively. Jazzy Owens-Barrett  and Shelby Hayes played an incredible defensive game and recorded 3 steals and 1 block respectively. For Vermont, Anna Olson, Keira Hanson, and Catherine Gilwee were the stars, They put up 15, 14, and 10 points respectively. Bella Vito had 9 points and 3 steals, playing an incredible game as well. It seemed like Vermont just ran out of steam as Rice gained all the momentum, pulling away for a win in Cancun.
