With the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament starting on March 14, it's time to discuss the Midwest Region. The region includes the No. 2-ranked team in the country and a huge favorite to win the national title in Grand Valley State.

Grand Valley State women's basketball is 32-2 overall, with one loss coming to Big Ten member Ohio State. The Lakers will have the honor of again hosting the Midwest region in GVSU Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich on heels of winning its third straight conference title last week, defeating rival Ferris State.

Although GVSU is one of the best teams in Division II, it's attempting to win just its second national championship in program history, with its first coming in 2006.

The Lakers' first game of the region is against No. 8 Quincy at 5 p.m. ET on March 14. This is part of the four-game first round of the Midwest Region that will be streamed live on FloCollege and the FloSports app.

Here is what to know about the Midwest Region.

What Teams Are In The Midwest Region?

The eight teams of the Midwest region consist of Grand Valley State, Quincy (25-7), Wayne St. (19-11), Lewis (26-3), Ashland (31-2), Ferris State (21-11), Northern Michigan (22-8) and Hillsdale (21-9).

The seeds are:

  • No. 1 Grand Valley State
  • No. 2 Ashland
  • No. 3 Northern Michigan
  • No. 4 Wayne St. (MI)
  • No. 5 Lewis
  • No. 6 Hillsdale
  • No. 7 Ferris St.
  • No. 8 Quincy

The winner of the Midwest Region will face the winner of the NCAA Division II East Region Championship in the Elite Eight in Pittsburgh at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse.

NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament Midwest Region Schedule

Here’s the First Round schedule for the region. All times are ET.

Midwest Region semifinal match ups take place on March 15th at 5:00 p.m. ET and 7:30 p.m. ET at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich.

The Midwest Region Championship Game is March 17 at 7:00 p.m. ET at the GVSU Fieldhouse.

NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament Midwest Region Outlook

Grand Valley State is, without a doubt, the best team in this region. They were ranked No. 1 for most of the season before a two-point loss to Parkside, but they defeated No. 4 Wayne State and No. 7 Ferris State en route to their third straight conference championship.

They will play Quincy in the first game. GVSU defeated the Hawks in December 73-58. They hope to do business the same way and advance to the region's semifinals.

No. 2 seed Ashland is coming off a Great Midwest Conference title after winning three rounds over Thomas More, Northwood and No. 6 Hillsdale.

The Eagles are playing against Ferris State in the second game of the afternoon in the Midwest region. These teams also faced off against each other in late November, and it was a great game that saw Ashland come away with the ten-point win.
