Alexis Morris is not a household name but if she stays on her current trajectory, basketball fans will know her in the next couple of years. Since scoring 46 points in her varsity debut, Morris a 5-7, junior point guard (Legacy Christian Academy/Beaumont, Texas), has consistently dominated games with her crowd-pleasing cerebral, all-around basketball skill set.
Morris has racked up 2,462 points, 646 rebounds and 458 assists in only 83 games and is on a pace to become the ninth girl in Texas high school basketball history to score over 3,000 points.
As a result of her consistent dominance, Morris earned the No. 6 rank in the 2017 class according to ESPN's HoopGurlz and a spot on the USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team. Despite garnering individual accolades across the board, Morris is focused on her team’s success over personal records:
“My goals this year are to glorify God first and be a leader for my team on and off the court. I’m completely focused on getting everybody involved in games and being a more all-around team player. I truly just want to help my team to the state tournament and be the first team to not only get to state but bring home the first girls’ basketball championship for my school.”
After leading the U16 national team to a bronze medal by with a scoring average of 13.6 points per a game, Morris vowed to showcase her Team USA leadership skills once the prep season started. So far, she is averaging 25.5 points, 5 rebounds and a career-high 8 assists a game while leading the Lady Warriors to their third consecutive district title and closer to the elusive state championship.
To some, Morris is viewed as a basketball savant due to her talent and high basketball IQ. For first-year Legacy Christian head coach, Yannick "Yak" Denson, coaching a talent such as Morris has been better than he could have ever imagined, due to her outstanding work ethic and maturity.
“[Alexis] is by far one of the best players I have coached – hands down,” Denson said. “This has been a real life experience managing her production and wanting what’s best for her. She thinks the game, lives the game and dreams the game of basketball day in and day out. It’s been a blessing leading her and the girls this season and watching her morph into a bona fide leader.”
Thanks to Morris prowess on the court, Legacy Christian Academy has had high-profile visitors this season. Baylor women's head coach Kim Mulkey and top assistants from national powers Penn State, TCU and South Carolina have come to Southeast Texas to check out Morris. She currently has 15 scholarship offers on the table and counting. Baylor, UCLA, and Texas A&M lead the portfolio of schools who have already offered. So what is it going to take to get Morris to sign on the dotted line come Nation Signing Day in 2017?
“I want to go to a school that will give a great education and help me become a great all-around woman,” said Morris who is a two-time TAPPS All-State first team player. “The school I pick will help me reach my goals on and off the floor because life is about more than just basketball, and I although I love the game, I want to be even more successful in the game of life.”
