Welcome back, Klay Thompson.
Today, the U.S. men's basketball team won a closely contested game against France in the final minutes to end the match 100-97. Thompson, who finally found his range and appeared comfortable from the field, helped Team USA shoot 55 percent from the field.
Coach Krzyzewski's second line showed cohesion as they moved the ball and locked down on defense. Although that teamwork helped stump France, it was only noticeable in random spurts as the Americans largely relied on individual talent.
Thompson led the team with 30 points, and drained seven from beyond the arc. This team will need him to continue shooting well, as this was the final game of group play. Kevin Durant added 17 points and DeMar DeRozan contributed nine from the bench. DeRozan is a bright spot for the team—he does a great job of drawing fouls and getting to the line, which will pay dividends in pool play.
This wasn't a great game—the U.S. had a chance to pull away from France's extremely tough squad, but fell back into bad habits. Nonetheless, the talent is there, and if Thompson and DeRozan can continue to fill in the gaps, Team USA can once again take its group deep into medal contention.
