Confirmed: Brandon Roy Leaving Nathan Hale To Coach Alma Mater Garfield
Former NBA All-Star Brandon Roy will take the head coaching job at his alma mater Garfield (WA) after leading Nathan Hale (WA) to a perfect season and state championship.
The love for the game has always been there. It just took a little time to find the right fit. Brandon Roy has discovered a sense of normalcy in coaching high school basketball, and he is now set to return to where it all started.
After guiding Nathan Hale (WA) to a perfect 29-0 record and Washington Class 3A state title in his first year at the helm, sources confirmed the NBA All-Star will take the head coaching position at his alma mater, Garfield (WA), next season.
Roy, the 2017 Naismith National High School Coach of the Year, is currently recovering from a gunshot wound suffered earlier this month and will replace Ed Haskins, who recently took an assistant coaching vacancy at Washington State.

Nathan Hale, which featured 2017 Flo40 No. 1 Michael Porter Jr., 2018 Flo40 No. 23 Jontay Porter, and 2019 Flo40 No. 25 P.J. Fuller, defeated Garfield four times during the 2016-17 campaign, including in the Les Schwab Invitational semifinals and a 68-51 win in the state championship game.
Roy, 32, is natural leader, and coaching is the perfect fit. He has a way make everything around him special, and there seems to be no doubt he will elevate the Bulldogs to even greater heights following an incredible coaching debut.
