NEWS AND NOTES
JUST KEEP WINNING, JUST KEEP WINNING
UNCW has won its first eight CAA games for the first time since 2016-17, when the Seahawks opened their conference schedule 9-0 and would finish the regular season 15-3 on their way to a second-straight CAA title.
The Seahawks have won 11 straight dating back to December 15 - tied for the third-longest streak nationally and matching the program record set in 2015-16.
The CAA is the only conference with a men’s and women’s basketball program on a double-digit win streak, as UNCW’s 11-game streak is joined by the Drexel women’s team winning its 13th-straight game Sunday in double overtime.
AARON’S PARTY
Hofstra’s Aaron Estrada has risen to the ranks of the CAA’s leading scorer during a remarkable offensive stretch. Estrada has scored 20 or more points in six of eight conference games, highlighted by 30-point efforts in wins over Delaware and Charleston. Estrada leads the CAA with 23.0 points per game in conference contests.
WELCOME TO THE CAA!
The CAA announced the additions of Hampton, Monmouth, and Stony Brook as full members of the league for the 2022-23 season. The Pirates join from the Big South, the Hawks from the MAAC, and the Seawolves from the America East. All three played at least one CAA team in this year’s non-conference schedule.
THE ROAD TO VICTORY
Towson is one of 11 teams nationally with seven or more road wins this season, joining Belmont, Chattanooga, Eastern Washington, Fairfield, Jacksonville State, Monmouth, Navy, Oral Roberts, Wagner, and Weber State.
ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT (AND EVERY NIGHT)
32 of 43 games so far in CAA play have been decided by single digits, 17 by four points or less, and six by a one-point difference. The CAA ranks fourth among all conferences with 32.6% (14 of 43) games with a margin of less than four points or overtime.
LUCKY NUMBER NINE?
The last remaining unbeaten team in the CAA standings is UNCW, which improved to 8-0 with Saturday’s win over Hofstra. The Seahawks were picked ninth in the CAA preseason poll - the same spot occupied the previous October by 2021 regular season champion James Madison.
FRIENDLY COMPETITION
Reyne Smith won his fifth CAA Rookie of the Week honor Monday, as he and Ben Burnham have combined to give Charleston eight of 12 honors this season. Smith has made 58 three-pointers in his freshman campaign, good for third among all D1 rookies. Smith leads all CAA freshmen in scoring (12.6 ppg) and added CBS Freshman of the Week honors earlier this season.
NOTHING BUT NET
Towson leads CAA teams in the NET rankings at 85, while Hofstra is second at 104 and Delaware third at 127. Charleston holds a Quad 1 win with a victory at Chattanooga and Hofstra added one at Arkansas.
Hofstra has played seven total games against Q1 and Q2 with wins at Arkansas and Monmouth. Elon (23) and Hofstra (35) played two of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation this winter, per the NET rankings.
DOUBLY RELIABLE
Towson’s Cam Holden leads the CAA with eight double-doubles this winter, which ranks 23rd nationally.
Drexel’s James Butler and Delaware’s Dylan Painter are tied for second in the CAA with six double-doubles each, while Elon’s Michael Graham has five and Northeastern’s Chris Doherty has collected four.
