Why MOKAN Elite's Jontay Porter Has Been The Nike EYBL MVP So Far
May 9, 2017
The name already speaks for itself. So does the current team record. Add in comparable stats to any of the top hoopers in the Nike EYBL at the halfway mark and it’s easy to see why so much attention is on 2018 Flo40 No. 23 Jontay Porter right now.
Let’s take it one step further. The 6-foot-10 power forward for MOKAN Elite (KS) is not just the best player on the only undefeated squad, although that’s a huge factor. He deserves more credit than that. His entire body of work so far easily makes him the league’s MVP heading into Session III this weekend in Cartersville, GA.
Averaging 18.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 3.1 blocks through eight contests, Porter has made being a double-double machine look easy. His game has always been smooth, but the takeover gear he has shown while calmly impacting each end of the floor has been nothing short of brilliant.
Whether it is knocking down a 3-pointer from the top of the key, which is a shot he loves, or cleaning up the glass and putting it back in for tough buckets or finding the open shooters quickly after getting the entry pass, his offensive production has been strong.
Porter is also getting it done on the defensive end. In addition to his high block rate, he also nabs over one steal per game.
What’s next? Will he finish the same way he started? There’s only one way to find out.
