Will Kelsey Mitchell Break The NCAA Women’s Division I Scoring Record?
Kelsey Mitchell is chasing history. There is no other way to put it. The Ohio State senior guard is as decorated as any women’s college player today, and now she has a chance to cement her name as the game’s all-time leading scorer during the 2017-18 campaign.
At 5-foot-8 with a smooth left-handed jumper, Mitchell enters her final season with 2,553 total points (24.5 ppg.) and needs 974 to break former Washington star guard Kelsey Plum’s record of 3,527 points, which was set last season.
Is it possible? Absolutely. Will it happen? Only time will tell.
In order to break the mark, Mitchell, a three-time All American, will need to score more than she ever has in her collegiate career by shattering her own program single-season points record (889) set during her sensational sophomore year.
If the Buckeyes star were to become the 13th women's player to score 3,000 points and eclipse the record total by playing in as many games as last season (35), she would need to average 27.8 points per game.
Needless to say, the record is not safe. Mitchell was the fastest player ever to 2,000 career points and looked incredibly sharp in posting 25 points and 12 assists in just three quarters in No. 5 Ohio State’s exhibition win over Urbana this past Sunday.
Mitchell has a chance to make history, and it’s one of the top storylines in all of college basketball to follow this season.
